An artist from Falmouth is seeking people 70+ from the Redruth area to take part in a project exploring the idea of legacy.

Jessica Vokes, who recently successfully engaged in a community art project to create a quilt reflecting young mums’ experience of birth during the lockdown, wants people from the town to contribute to her Legacy Project.

From Monday, August 7 to Friday, August 11 she will be undertaking a residency at Bill’s Attic, in the Krowji studios at Redruth.

She is seeking participants from the Redruth area to contribute their stories to a collaborative artwork exploring the idea of legacy.

“I’m seeking to discover the answers to some of the questions that lurk in the dark recesses of all of our minds,” says Jessica.

“What is the meaning of life and is it important for us to figure it out while we’re still alive?

“What emotional legacy do we leave behind once we’re gone?

“What happens to us once the memory of us dies with those who knew us?

“What would the dead wish they could tell us while we still have good years left ahead of us?

“I believe that the truth lies in the material of the everyday, rather than the unfathomably profound.”

She wants to create an audio project collaboratively with the everyday people of Redruth, by inviting older community members (aged 70+) to come into the space for fixed appointments of 45 minutes, sit comfortably, have some tea, and tell her their life stories.

“I will be armed with a list of prompt questions, but we can also follow the natural flow of the conversation and see where it leads,” she said. “I will record these verbal excerpts and ultimately convert them into a richly narrative audio installation, musing on the meaning(s) of life – that is, an ordinary life well lived.

“Bill’s Attic is an incredible space and I would like for participants to experience their contribution to this project as a unique moment of reflection on one’s life, as told to a stranger, amid dusty curiosities and historical artefacts.”
