DESPITE blustery weather, the community of Carleen recently welcomed the return of its much-loved and historic event.

Following its revival in 2022, Carleen Tea Treat returned for its second year on Saturday, August 5.

However, despite the weather remaining dry the procession from Trew Green had to be abandoned along with the open-air Breage Band concert as it would have been too dangerous for the band.

That said, it didn’t stop members of the public from enjoying their time during the day. The tea treat continued in the hall, meanwhile, the young farmers were busy running the children’s fair games in the meadow. Games included ‘Blatt the Rat’ and ‘wellie wanging’

Musicians who were meant to have played on Trew Green provided those in attendance with music including the ‘serpent dance’. The serpent dance is a traditional Cornish dance which is associated with cultural events.

Food – including the tea treat buns were served by volunteers whilst a slide show of past tea tree events was displayed on a large screen. Children at the event were treated to a puppet show which was due to take place outside but was brought into Carleen Hall.

Later in the day, judging of banners which were designed and painted by the children, and posters which had been coloured in took place. Those judged the best were awarded prizes as were the winners of the games.

Phil Bates who organised the event said: “We were a bit worried about the weather and having to cancel the procession, but as it happened it didn’t put people off and we had a large number in attendance.”

To round off the day’s events, a ceilidh was held in the hall with entertainment from a local group called the Rosevilles Ceilidh band.

A ceilidh is an energetic dance with live music and a caller. The caller describes and/or demonstrates the dances and helps keep everyone in step. The aim is for friendly, fun dancing for all ages and abilities.

The organisers of the event have thanked members all those who took part in this year's event. A spokesperson said: "The organisers of the tea treat would like to thank all the hardworking volunteers involved, before, during and after the event, for all their efforts towards making the day a great success."
