A special service in celebration of the natural environment will be held at Truro Cathedral this month.

The service at 2pm on Saturday, September 16 will focus on the theme of climate justice, and will recognise the efforts of parishes and parishioners to care for the natural world.

It will take place during Creationtide, the period, from September 1 'til October 4, dedicated by the Church of England to mark the Season of Creation.

It will be the Diocese of Truro’s third annual Creation Care service, reflecting the Diocese’s pledge to “cherish creation, cut carbon and speak up” for the future of the environment.

The service will include an address on the meaning and importance of climate justice by the Right Reverend Hugh Nelson, Bishop of St Germans.

It will also feature performances by the Cornwall Youth Choir, and a presentation by children from St Uny Academy in Carbis Bay.

During the service, parishes will be presented with the Diocese of Truro’s Kernow Green Church Awards and national Eco Church Awards.

Participants will also be encouraged to make their own commitments to contribute to the care of the natural world.

“Truro Diocese are encouraging all churches to step up to the challenge of cutting carbon and caring for the environment,” says the Reverend Fiona Giorla, one of the organisers of the event.

“It’s good to see how many have signed up for the Eco church awards and are now achieving very positive results. This is a key time for the church to be playing its part in the fight for climate justice.

"We’re seeing an increasing number of extreme weather events around the world, and it’s clear that the poorer nations who have contributed least to climate change are suffering the most.”

Entry is free and all are very welcome.
