A memorial to Queen Elizabeth the Second paid for by donations from local people has been unveiled in Porthleven.

A Just Giving fundraiser was set up Cllr Adrian (Nipper) Naylor, a member of the Porthleven Town Council to raise £1,000 for a granite monument.

While they didn't quite raise that amount, they still found enough money locally to install the inscribed granite memorial and flower bed on Wellington Road.

On Saturday, September 9 the monument was unveiled by Porthleven’s mayor Cllr Michael Toy watched by members of the community.

Cllr Naylor said: “Following the sad death of the Queen last year, myself and a good friend Smiler Grinney, and ex Royal Navy colleague, thought it befitting that the Queen’s reign should be recognised by the residents of Porthleven with a granite inscribed memorial and flower bed.

“With the help of crowd funding and the support of local businesses, this has finally reached fruition.”

He added: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the local community, generous individuals, local organisations and businesses, for their support in making our vision become a reality.”

These include, Cornwall Council, Porthleven Town Council, Lee and his team at RGB, Customs House Gallery, Eurotool and Travis Perkins Helston, Stonemason Steve Dyer for sourcing and engraving the stone, and Kaz Toms for sourcing, and planting the late Queen’s favourite plants and shrubs.

In the original Facebook post about the fundraiser, Cllr Naylor said: “The nation recently lost our beloved Queen who gave 70 years of loyal and steadfast service, and was the ‘great’ in Great Britain.

“To many of us she had been the one constant in our lives, and like us, she experienced the good and bad that most families experience, but always faced these travails with stoicism and with the interests of the nation first.”

He added: “I realise that not everyone supports the monarchy, and their views must be respected, however for those of us that do, a simple memorial stone would be a lasting tribute to a great Queen from the people of Porthleven.”
