TWO people have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after a protest at a university campus in Penryn today (Oct 11).

Two graduates sprayed orange paint on university buildings at the Tremough Campus in Penryn as part of a Just Stop Oil protest over the UK government's planned new oil and gas projects.

The protest took place at around 11am on Wednesday, October 11 and police were called to the scene but the protest had ended peacefully and those involved had since left.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson: "Officers have attended Falmouth University this afternoon following reports of paint being thrown as part of a possible protest.

"A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and remain in police custody."

A University of Exeter spokesperson said: “A protest has taken place at the Penryn Campus in Cornwall.  We respect the right to protest, provided it is conducted safely, respectfully and within the boundaries of the law.”

A spokesperson for Falmouth University told The Packet: "This morning, there was a peaceful demonstration on Penryn Campus. We respect peaceful and lawful protest; however, this event was escalated by a small number of individuals who caused criminal damage to two buildings. This will now be investigated by police and through our internal processes."

Just Stop Oil supporters say they are "not prepared to stand by and watch while the government plans for millions to die and destroys everything we care about. It’s up to all of us now to come together and resist. We cannot let them divide us. Together we can be the real opposition this country needs and we will win. We will stop new oil and gas."

Supporters from all over the UK plan to march day after day in London from October 29 in support of the cause.
