A modest young man praised for intervening to try and save a little dog from being killed by an XL American Bully breed has told the Packet “I’m no hero”.

Ketan Cooper, aged 21, literally leapt into action when he heard horrifying screams coming from the small field opposite his home on the Eve Parc estate in Falmouth last Friday afternoon (October 6).

He didn't realise at first that outside Laura Williams, who lives nearby, was trying to fight off an American XL Bully which had her beloved Chihuahua called Luka in its jaws.

He said he was playing on his X-Box and at first when he heard the screams he thought that his mum was watching something on TV.

“Since it continued, I went to check what the hell she was watching,” he said. “After checking I saw my mum was not in her room at all and the TV was off.

“When I looked out the window I saw a lady fighting off a dog. Without even thinking I ran down stairs and ran out the house.

“As I was running out the house I shouted to my mum ‘Keep the dogs in, there’s a dog attack outside!’ (as we have two little dogs of similar size). I didn’t even have time to put shoes on, I just ran as fast as I could.”

Ketan, an assistant manager at the Phoenix Cinema in Falmouth, said he jumped over the little barrier and ran straight to Laura.

“I saw Laura basically fighting off the big dog and her screaming for help,” he said. “Laura was doing everything she could, she was so, so brave.

They tried together to get the XL to drop Luca, with another woman joining in one point, but she had to stop because she had two young children with her.

“I was grabbing the dog’s throat trying to pull the dog off whilst Laura was holding on to Luca,” said Ketan “I even picked up the big dog by its tail taking it off its hind legs, but it literally didn’t care about Laura or I, its sole focus was poor Luca.”

He said after about a five to eight minutes of struggle with the big dog, it got free of Laura and him and ran away with Luca in its mouth, shaking it like a rag doll.

He said after a short while the owner finally came to the field and called the big dog off Luca, which it did.

He said by this time a big crowd of about 12-15 people had gathered around some of them coming out of their house after hearing Laura’s screams for help.

“It reminded me of like a fight at school where everyone just circles around,” he said.

When finally the big dog let go of Luca, Ketan ran straight over to him and picked him up as “fast” as he could and started running to his car whilst shouting for his mum to get the car keys so they could go to the vets.

His mum grabbed the keys and brought Laura to the car as she was in a state and drove to Rosemullion Vets in Bickland Water Road whilst Ketan was trying to give Luca CPR and mouth to mouth.

As they got to the vets, before the car even stopped, Ketan jumped out of the car and ran inside.

“The receptionist saw me rushing in with Luca and grabbed Luca off me straight away rushing him to the back for extra help,” he said. “Shortly after they got us a private room where they told us Luca didn’t make it.

“I must say that I am absolutely no ‘hero’. I was only doing what I would want someone to do if my family or dogs were ever in that situation.

“There was no way I could have left Laura’s cries for help by herself and I truly feel it was the right thing to do. I also feel Laura’s immense courage and bravery spurred me on to be braver and try to help little Luca too. I must say I have never seen anything so brave in my life than Laura’s actions in her attempt to save her ‘baby’.”

Modestly he said he didn’t want a photo taken as: “I don’t want to be thanked for just doing the right thing.”

Following the attack the XL Bully was also put down at the owner’s request.
