The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain and winds to hit the South West tomorrow.

The yellow warning is in place from 5am on Tuesday until noon with gusts of winds expected to reach 40-50mph.

Drivers are being warned that driving conditions could be affected due to spray, standing water and hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus. Other modes of travel including rail and flights may also be delayed.

The Met Office said: “A band of very squally showers is expected to push quickly east across the warning area reaching the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall by 5am, then continuing quickly east through Tuesday morning.

“Sudden torrential downpours will bring 15-20 mm of rain in a short period. Showers will likely be accompanied by thunder and lightning.

“Gusts of winds to 40-50mph are also likely, as is hail. The last of the showers should clear into the North Sea late Tuesday morning.”
