Helston has been given a first look today at proposed changes to one of its most historic and well-known buildings in the town.

A public consultation for members of the public to have their say on Helston’s Guildhall reimagining plans is taking place today (Monday).

If the full plans go ahead, it would mark the first major changes to the Grade Two* listed building since the 19th century.

With the Guildhall falling into increasing disrepair and in need of major work, the town council launched a project to restore the building while finding ways to see it used more by the community.

The project also included plans for a co-working space to be established in the basement of the guildhall.

As previously reported in the Packet, a set of three images was released ahead of today’s public consultation where members of the public are welcome to come and ask questions and discuss their thoughts and concerns on the plans. The consultation will welcome members of the public until 9pm this evening.

Here are all the Guildhall reimagining proposals, in full:

There are currently two Workbox offices in Cornwall, one in Truro and the other in Penzance.

Plans show that the entrance to the Workbox will be where the public toilets on Church Street are currently based. The floor will be level for better accessibility for people with disabilities. Plans also show a large area for office space, a kitchen and reception area, separate offices, and smaller rooms for Zoom and Team meetings.

Helston projects officer, Charlotte Caldwell told the Packet: “We have put in a bid for external funding for better toilets to be in Drill Hall Yard (next to the Museum of Cornish Life).

“The Changing Place toilets include better accessibility for those who need it. They include a hoist and a shower.”

Guildhall Ground Floor and Corn Exchange.

He said: “I think it’s a positive move forward.

“There will be more facilities for people and more business opportunities for those who will use the Workbox.

“We are bringing the building into the 21st century but keeping the town’s history.”
