A new restaurant is opening in Helston this Friday, just in time for Christmas.

For anyone wondering what has happened to Helston Meadery in Wendron Street, which closed down earlier this year, all has now been revealed.

The building is becoming a new tapas restaurant, serving freshly made tapas created on site.

The Cellar Tapas Bar menu will include dishes such as chicken thighs with coconut and lime, honey baked cocktail sausages with sesame seeds and pulled pork tacos for meat eaters, whitebait with lime, garlic chilli king prawns, and salt and pepper squid for fish lovers, while vegetarians can enjoy rosemary hasselback potatoes, grilled halloumi and falafel balls.

There will also be classic tapas dishes with a Spanish twist such as meatballs in tomato sauce, and patatas bravas.

Setting up the new restaurant on behalf of its owner is Matt Ferguson, who is already well known in the area for previously running pubs under the West Cornwall Inns brand, including the Queen’s Arms at Breage and Henlys in Helston, before the company was forced to close in October due to spiralling costs.

He will be heading up the kitchen, and bringing some of his former staff members with him.

Leading the front of house team will be Ben Bailey, who was assistant manager at the Fire Engine at Marazion, also one of Matt’s pubs until recently.

Joining Matt in the kitchen will be Jess Oldland, who was part of the cheffing team at the Queen’s Arms, while a number of Matt’s former waiting staff will be on hand to take orders and serve meals.

The team say they are keen to offer another food option for families of Helston, the Lizard and the surrounding area.

Matt said: “We’re really pleased to be able to offer another choice to Helston diners. Tapas is such a sociable way of eating and perfect for getting together with family or friends to catch up.

“That’s one of the reasons we were so keen to get open in time for the Christmas and New Year period, which is a real family time.

“Our emphasis will be on quality food served in a really relaxed environment – we want people to feel able to enjoy a leisurely meal over a few dishes, and then order a few more if the mood takes them! Alternatively, people are welcome to just come in for a glass of wine or a cold beer.”
