The future of a bus route in Helston could soon be improved with plans for more stops and better information display for the public.

At Helston Town Council’s final full meeting of the year on Thursday, Cllr Mike Thomas revealed that he had been working alongside Cllr Guy Foreman from Cornwall Council to discuss the idea of adding new stops to the Helston Town Bus service following the increase of new homes built and being built in the town.

Following a meeting with Transport for Cornwall, along with Cllr Foreman and two residents, it was agreed that there will be an exploration into creating a new bus stop at the bottom of The Furry (Furry Way) to allow bus riders to walk the short distance to Coronation Park.

As well as this, there are plans for new bus flags (bus stops) to be installed around the route, including newer housing estates such as Park an Daras on the Falmouth Road.

Cllr Thomas has also requested the installation of real-time electronic bus displays around the route. Real-time displays allow people at bus stops to see what time and when the bus they are hoping to catch will be stopping. These displays are said to be ‘useful’ by Mr Thomas, specifically at busier stops such as Tesco and the town centre.

Currently, the bus service for Helston includes nine stops, including Helston Seven Stars (now the Inn & Still), opposite Carey Parc, Pendeen Park, Manor Way, Tesco, Trengrouse Way (opposite Kingsley Way), Helston Sainsbury’s (for Flambards), and Bulwark Road with the bus running on the hour from 8.45am to 3.15pm.

Cllr Thomas has expressed his gratitude to people who suggested a more improved bus route, and to Transport for Cornwall. He told the Packet: “I am grateful to the residents who brought to my attention that the bus route is great but could be better.

“The residents would like to visit the boating lake, however at current, there isn’t a stop nearby.

“I would also like to thank Transport for Cornwall for being approachable towards strategic issues to how Helston is changing, and also how important is it looking towards the future.”
