Up to five new houses could be built on an industrial estate on the main road between Helston and Penryn, as a company looks to “rationalise the business.”
An application for planning consent has been lodged for the construction of up to five houses by Truro Portable Buildings at Longdowns Industrial Estate.
The business would remain and continue to trade at the site, with part of the land given over to housing.
Seven houses are already being built at the entrance to the industrial estate, where the former Stonemason’s Arms pub used to be, on the opposite side of the road to the fuel station.
A planning statement attached to the application, submitted to Cornwall Council, states: “The applicant wishes to rationalise the business in terms of its land take and buildings.
“This is a large site and the company holds a lot of stock in the application site area. A more efficient use of land can benefit the business and also enable this small housing scheme to be delivered.
“Alternative office space, parking and sales space will be used elsewhere within the applicant’s land ownership.”

It goes on to add: “The current use of the site is a showroom/sales area which serves Truro Portable Buildings, owned and run by the applicant Mr Des Allen.
“The site can comfortably accommodate five dwellings and do so in a way that positively responds to the access, the neighbouring dwellings south to north-west, and the client’s retained commercial units.”
Parking is shown at the front of the proposed properties, with two spaces per house.
Access to the commercial units would also remain in terms of width.
Planning consent for the land to be used as an industrial estate was granted in May 1983, with permission for seven light industrial units.
