A new Dean of Truro Cathedral and Rector of St Mary's Parish has been installed.

The Right Rev Hugh Nelson, the bishop of St Germans, installed Canon Simon Robinson as Dean at a service on January 21.

Dean Simon first came to Truro Cathedral as Interim Dean in October 2022.  His Majesty King Charles approved the nomination of Canon Simon as Dean in August last year.

A congregation of local community members mingled with visitors from all over the UK, filling the cathedral to witness the installation.

Friends, family, faith leaders, and civic dignitaries stood shoulder to shoulder for the Evensong service, which notably featured the collation, induction, and installation of Canon Simon Robinson.

The Vice Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, James Williams stated: "The appointment of a new Dean requires royal approval.

"In Cornwall we are all delighted to have someone of Simon’s calibre to lead the worship and the life of Truro Cathedral."

The service wasn't just limited to the cathedral but was made accessible to everyone, as it was also live-streamed and is available for viewing on the Truro Cathedral YouTube channel.

The Right Rev Hugh Nelson sang Mr Robinson's praises, saying: "Simon has brought so much to the life and work of the cathedral since he arrived with us, and it was wonderful to welcome him fully as the Dean of Truro.

"He is a man of deep faith and inspiring leadership, and I am delighted to be serving the church and people of Cornwall alongside him."

Echoing these sentiments, Daphne Skinnard, member of the chapter of Truro Cathedral, said: "It was an honour to witness this historic and joyful occasion.

"Simon brings great strengths to the cathedral and local community, and we are delighted he is with us."

The new dean expressed his delight and said: "Working at Cornwall’s great cathedral here in Truro over the past year has been such a privilege.

"I have so loved being in Cornwall and knowing that I am now staying here fills me with joy."

He went on to thank the community for their support and said that he was hopeful for the journey ahead for the cathedral and the Cornish community.
