The annual Hellebore Day fundraiser for ShelterBox is coming to Truro this month.

This special-open garden event is anticipated to draw the attention of garden enthusiasts, showcasing the winter blooming hellebore at Bosvigo House.

For nearly 30 years, the property's owner and hellebore breeder Wendy Perry has organized the annual event to raise awareness and funds for the disaster relief charity, ShelterBox.

Throughout its history, Hellebore Day has resulted in proceeds of over £20,000 for the charity.

Ms Perry said: "Nothing could cheer people up more than the sight of a hellebore in winter.

"There is plenty of joy in finding new colours and patterns from them – it’s endlessly fascinating.

"They’re related to buttercups and can easily stay beautiful for a good 10 weeks."

Ms Perry started the event in memory of her daughter Hannah, a talented artist who loved colour and was deeply practical at heart.

"Hannah would have approved greatly of ShelterBox and the type of support it provides to people around the world," she added.

ShelterBox, a Cornwall-based charity founded in 2000, provides tangible support in the form of emergency shelter and other essential items to people who have lost their homes due to conflict or disaster.

The event this year will take place on Saturday, 24 February.

Gates will open at 9.30am and close at 4.30pm.

Mayor of Truro, Cllr. Carol Swain, will officially open the event.

Although there is no entry fee, attendees are encouraged to donate to ShelterBox.

The event is not just about fundraising though. Hundreds of Ms Perry's famous hellebore seedlings will be on sale, while visitors can feast on food served all day in the historic 18th-century kitchen, and sample homemade cakes and refreshments in the picturesque garden.

John Stanbury, the community fundraising officer at ShelterBox, said: "We are so grateful to Wendy and her friends for their deep well of empathy and longstanding support," Stanbury praises.

"Hellebore Day and Wendy Perry's spring garden are also a celebration of the self-recovery and renewal ShelterBox hopes to provide wherever we respond."
