TWO parents who failed to ensure their child attend school for over six months have been ordered to pay over £1,600 between them.

The parents who, along with the child, cannot be identified because of her age, failed to send their child to the school in West Cornwall between December 5, 2022 and June 9, 2023.

Each parent was charged separately as a parent of child of compulsory school age registered at a school who failed to attend regularly.

The prosecution was bought by Cornwall Council which as the Local Education Authority is responsible for ensuring children of a compulsory age attend school.

Neither parent turned up for the hearing in Truro Magistrates’ Court last week and were convicted of thew charges in their absence.

The court heard that despite being the parents of the child of compulsory school age, they failed to ensure she attended school she was registered at between those dates.

Children must get an education between the school term after their 5th birthday and the last Friday in June in the school year they turn 16.

Each of the child’s parents was fined £440, ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £176 and to pay costs of £233.50 to be paid by March 6. Making a total of £1,698 between them.
