Police are warning drivers to be careful after heavy rainfall yesterday and overnight left flooding in parts of Cornwall.

Particularly badly affected has been the road at Poldhu, between Mullion and Cury on the Lizard Peninsula.

The road over the bridge, near to the beach, is entirely underwater while the car park resembles more of a lake.

Despite this, the hardy team behind the Poldhu Beach Café have said they continue to remain open today (Sunday) – just bring some wellies if you need to come from the direction of Helston.

The team put up a note on the café’s Facebook page this morning to say: “Flooding (again). The bridge and car park at Poldhu is completely underwater.

“We are OPEN as usual until 4.30pm but wear some welly boots!”

Falmouth and Helston Police have also warned of the flooding, advising both motorists and pedestrians to be careful there and across the area.

The police team said: “Please be careful on the roads today. Lots of flooding and standing water. Road at Poldhu, Helston is currently flooded.”

This has also been confirmed by traffic monitoring system INRIX, which is saying: “Poldhu Road both ways closed due to flooding around Poldhu Cove turn off.”

Flooding on the road at Poldhu has become an increasingly common occurence in recent months, with it becoming impassable to some vehicles for a time on more than one occasion.

A yellow weather warning for rain had been in place from 3pm on Saturday that was originally due to continue until 6pm on Sunday.

However, the Met Office has now revised this and lifted the weather warning for Cornwall, with the south east of England now the only part of the UK to fall within it, including London, Brighton and Cambridge.
