Wales & West Utilities will shortly begin work to upgrade gas pipes in the St Clements Street area of Truro.

The work will begin on March 4 and, barring any engineering difficulties will finish in June. The work is essential to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.

Wales & West Utilities has liaised with Cornwall Council to plan the work and it has been agreed that traffic management will be in place throughout. This will include:

  • Four-way lights at the junction of St Clement Street, New Bridge Street, St Austell Street and Mitchell Hill (March 4 - 15)
  • Two-way rolling traffic lights on St Clement with additional light head on Campfield Hill (April 8 - 19)
  • Three-way traffic lights at the junction of Pydar Street and Union Street (May 28 – June 12)
  • Old Bridge Street will be closed to north east bound traffic, from the junction of the car park to the junction with St Clement Street (March 4 – April 8) 
  • - Traffic will be able to enter from the St Clement Street junction whilst the exit from the car park will be left onto Old Bridge Street.

Wales & West Utilities Jason Gale is managing this gas pipe upgrade work. A spokesperson said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

"We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Truro. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.”
