Members of the Culdrose community have welcomed back their gym this week - following an extensive £200,000 refurbishment project.

The 24-hour gym at RNAS Culdrose has welcomed a fresh new look as well as brand-new equipment to boost people’s physical and mental health.

As well as removing all the old kit and repainting the entire suite, the new gym includes four rooms of new machines – from weight training benches to exercise bikes, running machines and everything in between.

Singled out for praise for leading the project was petty officer Steve Homer, who said it was a huge team effort to get everything completed and in top condition.

“This is a great investment,” Steve said. “We’ve probably got 300 people each day who benefit from this facility. Our motto is ‘fit to fight and fit for life’ – that sums it up for us.

“Keeping fit is good for your physical health and it’s also good for your mental health. It makes a huge difference.

“People can come here at any time, they don’t have to just sit in their cabins - they’ve got this fantastic 24-hour facility.”

Chief petty officer Liam Saunders, who oversees the sports centre, commended his team for completing the project. He said this refurbishment, with its investment from Culdrose Command, was one of the ‘largest and most comprehensive’ he had seen within the Royal Navy.

The gym is housed downstairs at Culdrose’s sports centre, which also includes a sports hall, squash courts and a swimming pool.
