Changes are to be made to a 'dangerous' crossing where a woman died in 2022 after being hit by a van.
The improvements to the crossing on the the A39 between Mabe and Tremough Campus have been revealed prior to the results of a public consultation being released next month
A campaign to make the crossing safer was launched following the death of newlywed Eka Schofield in June 2022.
An inquest into the death of 33-year-old Eka, originally from Georgia but living in Mabe with her new husband Zev at the time, stepped into the road in front of the driver of the van who had no time to avoid hitting her.
Two eyewitnesses said Eka ran out into the road as she looked the 'wrong' way as she emerged from a heavily overgrown path with protruding trees.
At her inquest this time last year her husband said the pedestrian island road crossing was a “disaster waiting to happen” and demanded changes to it, branding it “dangerous”.
Plans for safety improvements at the pedestrian refuge on the A39 Mabe Bypass have now been revealed by Cornwall Council, prior to the release of the results of the public consultation on March 11.
The work includes:
• New warning signs on both approaches to the pedestrian refuge. Highlighting the presence of pedestrians to approaching drivers.
• ‘Look Left’ and ‘Look Right’ markings will be provided at the crossing point to remind pedestrians of the traffic flow direction.
• A new paved surface and kerbed footway will be installed, alongside tactile paving at the crossing point to increase the distinction between footway and carriageway.
• Reinstated red surfacing within the hatched area on the southern approach to the refuge, further highlighting the upcoming pedestrian refuge.
Cornwall Council says the works are proposed to increase driver awareness of crossing pedestrians, whilst providing further improvements to the crossing point.
The A39 Mabe Bypass Safety Works are being carried out by Cormac Solutions Ltd on behalf of Cornwall Council
The elements of the scheme can be seen on the consultation plan. Works are provisionally booked to be completed before the new financial year.
