Young artists aged between 15 and 19 living, studying, or working in the Penzance parish are being given an opportunity to serve as the first Mayor's Young Artist.

Councillor Stephen Reynolds, Mayor of Penzance, said: "The Penzance Town Mayor has traditionally appointed army, police and sea cadets every year, reflecting the importance of these services to the lives of our communities.

"But art and culture also play a huge role in local life, and that’s why this year we will be appointing our first-ever Mayor’s Young Artist."

The Mayor's Young Artist will have a chance to exhibit their talent and imagination to Penzance's community members.

The successful candidates are expected to offer a visually arresting piece of art inspired by Penzance, and its civic year milestones.

Their final work will be exhibited at Penlee House Gallery & Museum in May 2025.

While serving as the Mayor’s Young Artist, the recipient will receive a £500 bursary, inclusive of a one-to-one mentoring session with a professional artist, art materials, and travel costs.

Anna Renton, director of Penlee House, said: "The Penzance parish has a long tradition of inspiring artists to live and work here, which we tell the story of at Penlee House Gallery & Museum.

"Penlee House is delighted to be able to offer support to the next generation through the Mayor’s Young Artist.

"We’ll provide a link to some mentoring, and we can’t wait to display the artist’s works in the gallery in May 2025."

For those interested in seizing the unique opportunity, applications can be submitted online, inclusive of three examples of the applicant's work and an explanation for wanting to become the Mayor’s Young Artist.

Contact digital@penleehouse.org.uk for more information; the submission deadline is 12 noon on April 8, 2024.
