Truro neighbourhood police have joined up with partners to help tackle shoplifting.

Cornwall Council, Safer Cornwall, Truro City Council, Young People Cornwall, Cornwall Fire and Rescue, Shopwatch and Truro BID recently coordinated a Safer Business Action Day (SaBA) in the city centre.

Shoplifting and associated anti-social behaviour were selected as the primary focus after deliberations.

The decision was a response to issues impacting local businesses.

The Devon & Cornwall Police team in Truro, upon consultation with local retailers, recognised that acts of shoplifting and anti-social behaviour are negatively affecting businesses.

There have been increased reports from the retailers about these concerns.

The insights gathered by officers from members of the public suggest that these issues are causing discomfort and discouraging locals from enjoying their time in the city centre.

Nationally, there has been a growing focus on retail crime due to a considerable increase in shoplifting, violence against retail staff, and progression in organised crime.

The National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) has released a retail crime action plan in this regard and set shoplifting and anti-social behaviour as two core priorities.

During the SaBA, plain-clothed officers were deployed into specific city premises providing guidance and reassurance to shopkeepers reporting ongoing shoplifting affecting staff safety.

High visibility patrols were carried out and multiple local businesses were visited to allow them to raise any concerns or issues with law enforcement.

PC Richie Wilson said: "The Safer Business Action Day was a success, and we achieved some positive results.

"It is hugely beneficial for the police to work alongside partner agencies to tackle local issues, and to understand a rounded view of how we can best target our resources to make Truro an even safer place to live and work.

"On behalf of Truro neighbourhood policing team, I would like to thank all of the retailers, partner agencies and individuals who supported the Safer Business Action Day, especially our volunteers."

Another SaBA is planned to take place later this year following the success of this event.
