The former home of an iconic Cornish company is to be put up for auction following its closure after more than four decades.

As the home of Mounts Bay Trading Company, the recognisable property at 8-9 Causewayhead has been a staple of Penzance’s retail landscape since 1978.

Mounts Bay Trading Company was known for its eclectic mix of clothing, home and garden furniture, and gifts, but has now closed its doors after a remarkable 44 years of service to the community.

The property now awaits a new chapter, and will up for sale by public auction next month with a guide price of £180,000.

Charles Darrow Auctions will oversee the sale on May 2, and said: “This presents a unique opportunity to acquire a property rich in history and potential.

“Located in the heart of Causewayhead, Penzance’s prime retail district, the property benefits from heavy foot traffic, especially during the bustling summer months.

“The area is a blend of regional and local shops alongside national brands, making it a prime spot for commerce.”

The building is described as “somewhat dilapidated, but characterful”, spread across four floors.

The ground floor’s double-fronted shop - originally two units - leads to additional sales space and facilities.

Dual staircases ascend to an open-plan first-floor sales area, with the upper floors providing extensive storage.

At the rear, the property extends to the Clarence Street Pay and Display car park, and includes a small external yard.

Any potential for future commercial, residential, or mixed-use development is subject to planning approval.

“We’re honoured to bring 8-9 Causewayhead to auction and anticipate keen interest from those who value its legacy and location.”
