Theft is one of the most common crimes to be appear before magistrates in Cornwall.

Here are a number of criminals sentenced by magistrates for thefts and other offences in Cornwall in April. 

Liam Parry

Weston Place, Penryn

The 30-year-old pleaded guilty to stealing two rings worth a combined £1,020 from Atlantis Jewells, Falmouth on February 17 this year.

He has now been sentenced by magistrates, on April 4, who fined him £80 and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £85 plus a £114 surcharge to fund victim services.

They also ordered him to complete an alcohol treatment plan for six months and a rehabilitation activity.

Jake Ormerod

Godolphin Road, Falmouth

The 32-year-old has appeared before magistrates twice this month for sentencing.

On the first occasion he was sentenced for pleading guilty to stealing two North Face tops, valued at £210, belonging to Cotsworld in Back Quay, Truro, on April 2 this year.

For this he was given a one-year condition discharge, on April 4, but ordered to pay £85 towards prosecution costs and a £26 surcharge to fund victim services.

Five days later he was back to be sentenced again, this time for stealing a suitcase and its contents from a woman at Bodmin Parkway Station, also on April 2 this year.

This time Ormerod was ordered to pay £300 in compensation to his victim, as well as fined £80.

He must also pay £85 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Jenna Newton

Gwithian Sands Chalet Park, Upton Towans, Hayle

The 29-year-old admitted stealing a khaki green quilted jacket, worth £40, from Peacocks in Penzance on September 23 last year.

In the same hearing she pleaded guilty to causing £77 worth of criminal damage to a police van, a further £150 damage to a second police van, and assaulting PC Abbott of Devon and Cornwall Police, all on the same date.

Despite the crimes dating back sentence months, Newton was only sentenced by magistrates last Tuesday, April 9. She was given a six-month alcohol treatment programme and rehabilitation activity, as well as a series compensation payments.

She was ordered to pay £40 in compensation to Peacocks, £227 compensation for damaging the police vans, and £180 to PC Abbott.

Ben Miners

Polgine Close, Troon

The 30-year-old pleaded guilty to stealing £436.50 worth of alcohol from Tesco Redruth on March 2, £500 worth of alcohol from Penzance Tesco on March 6 and stealing £391 worth of alcohol from Lidl in Hayle on November 6 last year.

In addition, he admitted possession of 1.28g of cocaine in Camborne on March 7.

The case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be written by the probation service.
