Customers have been warned to expect possible delays of 24 to 48 hours following a huge fire at an Evri parcel warehouse in the south west this afternoon.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service were called to the site in Avonmouth, near Bristol, at 1.29pm today (Tuesday) and sent 16 fire appliances to the scene.

People in nearby homes and businesses were advised to keep their windows and doors closed while they tackled the blaze in Boundary Road.

At 3.49pm, a fire service spokesperson said: “Eights appliances are currently on scene alongside specialist assets to help tackle the fire.

“Police are also in attendance to provide traffic management.”

The parcel delivery firm has since confirmed the fire has been extinguished.

An Evri spokesperson said: “Fire services attended a fire at our Avonmouth depot earlier today, all colleagues on site are safe and the fire has now been put out.

“Our main priority has been to ensure that all colleagues are safe, the cause of the fire will be fully investigated in due course.

“There were very few parcels at the site at the time with the vast majority of outbound deliveries having left the building.

“We have quickly made plans for alternative arrangements to minimise disruption to deliveries taking place over the next few days.”

The parcel depot, located at the Access 18 industrial estate, is located around seven miles from the centre of Bristol.

Evri has issued a statement to customers via its app that reads: "We're experiencing some slight disruption in Avonmouth today following a fire - for more information please visit www.evri.com/service/status
