Climbing the highest mountain in the UK wouldn’t be on most 13-year-olds' to-do lists, but for one determined young man, it's the next step in his incredible journey – all for a worthy cause.

In May, Tobias Newlyn-Jewell and his parents Nick and Amanda will climb Ben Nevis – the biggest mountain in the UK in aid of Sunrise Cornwall CIC.

Tobias - who lives in Truro wants to raise £500 for the charity in which his parents are close friends with charity founders Serena and Elliott Jolly.

A Crowdfunder has now been launched and can be viewed here: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/tobias-climbs-ben-nevis-for-sunrise.

However, the 13-year-old is no stranger to climbing and has already climbed two out of the three peaks in the National Three Peaks Challenge, Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddfa.

But now Tobias has set his sights on the big one Ben Nevis which is said to have an elevation of 1,345m and will in turn complete Tobias’s three peaks challenge.

In a statement shared on the Crowdfunding page, a spokesperson for Sunrise Cornwall CIC said: “We’re totally blown away and can’t thank him enough for choosing us, and he’ll officially become the youngest to fundraise for Sunrise so far.

“And so, we hope you’ll all get behind this incredible young man and support him on his quest to conquer Ben Nevis.

“Everyone associated with Sunrise is right behind you Tobias and we look forward to hearing all about it and seeing the updates on this brilliant challenge, you’ve totally got this mate!”

Dad and climbing partner Nick Jewell has praised his son's decision to take on Ben Nevis. He said: “We are immensely proud of Tobias for deciding to tackle Ben Nevis on behalf of such a great cause in Sunrise.

“Too many people in Cornwall are sadly affected by suicide and Sunrise is perfectly placed as a post-vention organisation to complement the fantastic work being done by all the prevention organisations.

"Tobias is aware of the fantastic work that they do with us being close friends with the founders Serena and Elliott and wanted to do what he could to help.”

Sunrise Cornwall CIC offers support to people exposed to suicide by providing safe spaces to meet, talk and share as little or as much as they are comfortable with – through music, art and wellbeing events, workshops and activities.

A post shared on its website reads: “Our sessions are for friends, parents, family members and colleagues – anyone who has been affected by suicide.

“We will offer them a safe, welcoming and supportive place to bring some positivity to their lives, during an extremely difficult time.

“We want to create a sense of comfort, community and connections through opportunities for self-expression and self-care.”
