Ambitious plans for a popular beach café in Cornwall have been scaled back following meetings with local residents and stakeholders.

Back in December of last year, the new owners the Gylly Beach Café on Gyllyngvase Beach unveiled ambitious plans for a new decked area in-front of the café and a Gylly Beach Wellness centre with showers, proper changing cubicles to encourage swimming and boat moorings.

But following feedback from the community, the team behind the scheme has submitted revised plans to Cornwall Council today which sees the additional seating extension to the front of the beach and boat moorings halted.

Instead, a brand-new seated decking area to the side of the café will replace the current water sports containers, with renovation plans to upgrade and improve the existing terrace area.

Healeys purchased Gylly Beach Café in August 2023 under the Cyderhouse Co Ltd Group, to continue running the enterprise under Cornish family ownership.

Joe Healey, managing director of Cyderhouse Co Ltd Group said: “Last autumn, we circulated a first round of visuals for ideas to improve the café. Since then, we’ve met with local stakeholders and residents to discuss the plans and hear their views. “We’ve listened to the feedback, which was incredibly supportive overall, but also highlighted that the previous plan for the decking area on the beach would take away from prime spots for sunbathers.

“Thanks to the feedback and suggestions of our local community, the main changes in our revised plan see the water sports containers relocated slightly to the east side of the beach, in a less used area, to allow for new sundeck seating.

“Additionally, the existing terrace will transform into an inside-outside experience for guests of the café, without imposing on prime beach space.”

Joe added: “The café has lacked investment in recent years, and it is hoped this investment will bring it back to life.

“We’re excited about the potential to enhance the offering for both the local community and visitors so that they can continue to enjoy the space throughout the year, not just in the peak seasons.

“Gylly Beach Café is known for its iconic views, amazing food and friendly atmosphere, and we look forward to giving Gylly the investment it deserves.”
