A kayaker had to be rescued after getting into difficulties at the start of a four day expedition from The Lizard to Brixham.
Falmouth Inshore lifeboat was alerted at 10.53am this morning (August 8) following a Mayday call concerning a solo kayaker that was struggling with the conditions, two miles south east of Zone Point.
The kayaker was at the start of a four day expedition from The Lizard to Brixham, however as conditions worsened decided that carrying on would have exhausted them, putting them into severe difficulty and risk.
The inshore lifeboat 'Robina Nixon Chard' launched at 11am into moderate seas and a SW force 3/4 wind.
At the request of the Coastguard the kayaker activated their Personal Location Beacon, allowing the lifeboat to pick up the signal with its directional finding equipment and was on scene within just nine minutes.
Once it was established that no medical assistance was required, the crew took the kayaker and their boat onboard and returned to the lifeboat station, arriving at 11.55am.
In this instance, the casualty had been caught out by the conditions and was well prepared, with dry suit, buoyancy aid, radio, mobile phone and Personal Location Beacon. They did exactly the right thing by contacting the Coastguard and requesting the aid of the lifeboat.
