A site in Helston, once the centre of controversy, could soon become a community haven - but first, it needs input from local people.

Helston Downsland Charity (HDC) has revealed that it is seeking the input of members of the community to suggest ideas on how best to manage the three fields of the A394, opposite Helston Community Hospital – known to many as Hospital Cross Fields.

The site had been at the centre of a controversial plan for a retail park to be built, however in 2023 the plans were refused.

Parsonage Developments Ltd had applied for permission to develop a 2.7-hectare greenfield site at Hospital Cross, between the Sainsbury’s supermarket and Flambards Theme Park, to include an Aldi, McDonald's and Costa, with drive-thrus for the latter two.

However, in 2023 a decision was made under delegated powers by an officer at Cornwall Council to refuse planning permission on the grounds that it would have had an unacceptable impact on the character and appearance of the area. Now, HDC hopes that the space will become a place where people can come to improve their well-being and build relationships with people and nature.

The charity said that they have already had suggestions from members of the public about what could happen at the fields, including camping, educational workshops to community food growing.

Helston Downsland hopes that the use of the space will benefit the mental and physical lives of those planning on using it. A spokesperson said: “At a time when more and more of our open spaces are being developed, it has never been more important to preserve green spaces to ensure we have somewhere where people and nature can thrive.

“The mental and physical benefits of spending time outside are very well documented and an important antidote to the stresses many of us are experiencing every day.”

People are now eligible to share their thoughts on what the space could be used for by filling out an online survey which is available on the Helston Downsland Charity website.

However, for those who wish to complete a paper version, these are available at the Guildhall (Coninagehall Street). Completed surveys can also be returned here.

To ensure feedback has been incorporated, HDC will be holding a community meeting on November, 27 at St Mary’s Church Hall, Helston. This meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss survey results and for people to share further ideas.

The charity is also planning a public event early in 2025 at the Old Cattle Market, where residents can collaborate with HDC to create a comprehensive space that benefits everyone in Helston.
