Another Cornish Methodist church could become a home after it is put up for sale.
Pre-application advice is being sought to convert Grade II listed Edgcumbe Methodist Church, between Helston and Penryn, into a three- to four-bedroom home.
Access to the graveyard would need to be maintained through the property and this is being established.
The chapel has now closed for services and will be put up for sale, with the idea being that accompanying planning advice on the possibility of converting it into a house would help get the best price for it.
A report states: “In recent years the congregation size has diminished and the age profile of the congregation has increased. The relatively isolated location on a busy highway within a small hamlet of villages has added to a decrease in use of the building. The church closed for services recently and the decision was made to sell.
“In line with Charity Commission rules the best value possible must be achieved and it is believed that including pre-application advice would provide the best value option without undertaking a full and expensive planning application.”
For further details see pre-planning application on Cornwall Council's planning portal, using reference PA24/00985/PREAPP.
All planning applications submitted to the council have to be validated and are available for inspection by the public.
Anyone is also allowed to submit comments about full planning applications – whether in support or objection - although for pre-planning applications a planning officer from Cornwall Council will simply give advice. It is then up to the applicant to decide if they wish to submit a full application for planning permission.
