FOR this week’s Step Back in Time, we have pictures of Helston shops and businesses in the 1800s kindly provided by the Museum of Cornish Life.

In one picture, we’re taken back to Messrs Cunnack’s Tanyard in St Johns in 1882. This image captures the men of the Beam House, a tannery where hides were dressed. The Beam House was demolished in 1968 when the council altered the road between Helston and Penzance.

Another image shows the shop front of Lander & Son, Printers, Stationers, Booksellers, and Newsagents. The image depicts a lady and a boy standing on the doorstep, with posters announcing events in nearby towns.

Other pictures include two carpenter’s shops (one belonging to Nicholas Builder, Carpenter, and Undertaker of Breage which dates to around 1870) and the other, a shop owned by A Kneebone, a plumber, tin smith and cycle repair.
