The date for one of Cornwall's longest-running winter livestock shows has been announced.
The Helston Fatstock Show which celebrates its 152nd year this year will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Franchis Farm, Helston with the kind permission of Mr Bob Cowell.
History of the Fatstock Show
Having started in 1870, the show is one of Helston’s longest running annual events and an integral part of the town’s history.
The show was originally held on a Monday which was the town's market day, with the livestock, farm crops and produce exhibited in the Town Drill Hall and the domestic classes exhibited in the Guildhall.
In the late 1980s, the livestock, farm crops and produce moved to be exhibited at the Old Cattle Market and continued there until 2005 when the old market buildings were to be demolished, it was then feared this would mean the end of the show, but at that time, Mr Cowell offered the show a new venue at Franchis Farm to hold the 2006 show.
It was the first time in 136 years that all sections would be held at one venue and a lifeline for the show to continue.
Fatstock Show in the 2000s
In 2007 the show welcomed a new section with the addition of classes for exhibiting sheep, this was well supported, and the show grew in popularity year by year.
Ten years later, the show was held in the newly built shed at Franchis Farm allowing more space for the show to expand.
Mr Don Cowell was named as the Show President for the 2017 show which was a success.
Held on Saturdays now, the event welcomes a wider audience to revel in the day's festivities.
