A fundraising campaign to honour the memory of one of Helston’s most beloved residents with a memorial bench has been launched.
The crowdfunding campaign, organised by Simon Colgan, aims to install a Martin Matthews memorial bench outside Central Methodist Church in Helston.
Local historian and former Freeman of Helston, Martin died peacefully on December 27, at the age of 84.
Martin moved to Helston just over 30 years ago and was a proud Helstonian, decorating his house with flags every Flora Day and taking part in the Hal-an-Tow for many years, although he only danced the Midday Dance once.
He had a huge interest in local history and collectables, so it was only natural that he went on to become curator of Camborne Museum and Helston Museum (now the Museum of Cornish Life) when he took on the role of Kerrier District Council’s museums’ officer in 1980.
You can read more about Martin’s life in a tribute published in the Packet in January here Remembering one of Helston's most beloved characters after death at 84.
The crowdfunding campaign aims to raise £1,000 to create a lasting tribute to Martin.
So far, the campaign has raised £165 with 67 days remaining.
On the page, Simon Colgan paid tribute to Martin. He said: “I know like all of you reading this will have a special memory of Martin.
“I personally have never met anyone like him, so passionate about the history of his local area. He was a very special man, for the likes we may never see again.
“I want people to be able to sit on this bench and think about Martin and all of the lives he touched.”
