There are calls for more people in Cornwall to host dementia day care sessions in their homes.

The Filo Project, which supports those living with dementia, is appealing for hosts in Falmouth and Bodmin to meet rising demand in the area.

The model involves hosts welcoming small groups of people with early to moderate dementia into their homes for a day of social connection, activities, and a home-cooked lunch.

Jude Pinder, chief operating officer at The Filo Project, said: "A Filo day is like a day with friends and varies depending on each group’s interests and abilities.

"Dementia can be a really isolating experience, so it’s incredibly rewarding to see people grow in confidence, renew old hobbies and interests, and make friends within the group.

"It’s a cliché but truly no two days are the same."

Since its formation in 2014, The Filo Project has supported around 5,000 people with dementia across the South West.

Hosts are paid, trained, and supported, but do not need to have previous professional care experience.

Ms Pinder said: "To be a Filo host you don’t have to have previous experience as a paid carer, we have hosts from all walks of life.

"It’s more important to have a caring nature, a sense of humour and to enjoy socialising with older people, as you get full training."

Hosts need a largely step-free home, a downstairs toilet, and a five-door car to transport guests.

They can welcome up to four clients per day and typically work between 8 and 16 hours per week.

Full training is provided in First Aid, Moving and Handling, Dementia, Food Hygiene, Safeguarding, Infection Control and Data Protection.

Hosts are paid a day rate rather than per client, meaning their income is protected even if a guest is unable to attend.

The Filo Project also offers ongoing support from a dedicated area coordinator and covers travel costs.

Ms Pinder said: "The Filo Project is proud of the strong support it provides staff, and hosts receive a regular, above-market wage and travel costs."
