Wales & West Utilities will begin a programme of gas pipe upgrades in Truro this weekend with work expected to complete in February.
The utility company says the project, focused around the St Austell Street area, is essential to keep supplies safe and reliable and to prepare the network for future low‑carbon gases.
The company has worked with Cornwall Council to agree temporary road closures from January 5 to February 9 at the following locations:
• New Bridge Street — between the junctions of Duke Street and St Clement Street.
• Duke Street — between Boscawen Street and New Bridge Street.
• St Mary’s Street — between High Cross and New Bridge Street.
• Mitchell Hill — between St Clement Street and James Place.
Multi‑way traffic lights will also be in place on St Clement Street, Austell Street and Furniss Close during the works.
Natalie Raphael, who is managing the upgrade for Wales & West Utilities, acknowledged the disruption but stressed the importance of the scheme.
“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future,” she said.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
