The Dean of Truro, The Very Reverend Simon Robinson, has been appointed the next Bishop of Warrington, following confirmation from Downing Street that His Majesty the King has approved his nomination. He will step down from his role as Dean on 30 April 2026.
Dean Robinson arrived in Truro as Interim Dean in 2022 before being installed in 2024, and has since overseen a period of significant change at the cathedral.
His leadership included steering the cathedral through its transition to registration with the Charity Commission, modernising its governance structure and recruiting a new Chapter team to help shape its future ministry.
Among the most visible developments during his tenure was the creation of ‘Carols with Pride’, an inclusive Christmas service that brought together LGBTQ+ members of the community, allies and the wider public.
He also oversaw the restoration and rededication of St Mary’s Aisle, a historic part of the cathedral now offering an enhanced space for worship and reflection.
A long-standing public advocate for safeguarding — and a survivor himself — Dean Robinson is expected to bring deep commitment and experience to his new role in Warrington. He will be consecrated by the Archbishop of York at York Minster on 30 April, before attending his official welcome service at Liverpool Cathedral on 23 May.
The Bishop of Truro, The Right Reverend David Williams, praised Dean Robinson’s service and described him as ‘one of the most prayerful’ people he has met in ministry.

Reflecting on his departure, Dean Robinson said his time in Truro had been transformative, adding that he would miss the early-morning quiet of the cathedral, its renowned musical ministry and the ‘quiet, faithful’ work of colleagues and volunteers.
Rev’d Jeff James, Senior Non-Executive Member of the Chapter, also praised his leadership during a challenging period, including guiding the cathedral through preparations for charitable status and work responding to the Bishop’s Visitation.
Following his departure, Bishop David will oversee Sunday services while interim arrangements are confirmed. Clergy, staff and volunteers will continue cathedral operations as usual.
