It has been a successful spring so far for Mullion Surf Life Saving Club, with members showcasing their skills, teamwork, and dedication at competitions and community events.

Last weekend, 31 children from Mullion SLSC competed against 16 other teams from across Cornwall at the Cornish Stillwater Frostbite Championships, held at Penzance Leisure Centre.

The event brought together more than 700 children aged seven to 13, who took part in a range of swimming, rescue, and board races.

Mullion SLSC finished 12th overall out of 17 clubs, which the club said was a fantastic result that reflected the team’s spirit, determination, and resilience throughout the competition.

The children wore their club T-shirts with pride, with the kit sponsored by Mullion Cove Hotel.

Earlier in the month, the club was also represented at the National Stillwater Competition at Cardiff International Pool. The event hosted 31 clubs and 950 Nippers from across the UK, with 14 of Mullion’s older Nippers competing on the Saturday. T-shirts for this event were sponsored by the Senior Rates Mess at RNAS Culdrose.

Last Wednesday it was the turn of the older children in the Youth section of the club to take part in an Inter Club Youth Event.

Year 7 to 11 members from Falmouth, Gunwalloe, and Mullion Surf life Saving Clubs came together at Helston Sports Centre’s pool for an action-packed evening of swimming challenges, manikin carries, casualty tows, medley relays, and board events.

A Mullion club spokesperson said: “The atmosphere was absolutely electric — full of enthusiasm, teamwork, and friendly competition.

“It was brilliant to see so many young people pushing themselves and cheering each other on.”

Beyond competition, the club has continued its commitment to community education.

Last week, lifeguards and coaches supported George Haynes from Surf Life Saving GB in delivering a Splash School session for Year 7 students from Mullion School. The programme focused on water safety, with students enjoying a memorable day on the beach and in the sea at Polurrian Cove.

Surf Life Saving GB is part of an international movement dedicated to equipping people of all ages with vital sea safety knowledge and life-saving rescue skills. Many participants go on to become lifeguards with the RNLI.

Run entirely by volunteers since the 1950s, Mullion SLSC continues to play a vital role in the local community. The club helps young people and adults develop an understanding of the sea — from tides and rip currents to wave conditions — while also building confidence, fitness, and teamwork in a safe and supportive environment.

Affiliated with Surf Life Saving GB, Mullion SLSC is part of a network of more than 60 clubs across the UK, alongside hundreds more worldwide.
