A new vets consultation unit could soon be on its way to Porthleven, offering what is thought to be the village’s first dedicated space for everyday pet appointments.

An application submitted to Cornwall Council’s planning department by Mrs Joanna Sharp, on behalf of the Porthleven Harbour & Dock Company, outlines plans to site a 7m x 3m anthracite‑grey Portacabin in The Shipyard to house a consultation room and waiting area.

In the Design and Access and Heritage Statement accompanying the application, it states: “The veterinary practice proposing to use the unit will undertake consultations and minor veterinary procedures such as inoculations and health checks.

“All other treatments will be offered at their main place of business located outside of Porthleven. The cabin will be connected to water and electric supplies already available in the location.”

The vets practice hoping to open the unit has not be identified at this time.

The Shipyard, one of Porthleven’s most distinctive commercial areas, hosts a mix of workshops, retail units and service businesses. The Design & Access and Heritage Statement adds that the proposed Portacabin would sit comfortably within this environment, where utilitarian structures and practical materials are already part of the visual character.

The cabin “will be anthracite grey in colour and placed on jacklegs of the same colour. Internally the unit will be divided into a consultation room and waiting area,” it states in the application.

The cabin would feature an entrance door on the south end and two front‑facing windows. It would connect to existing water and electricity supplies already available on site, minimising the need for additional infrastructure.

Parking and Access

The proposal confirms that the development will not remove any existing parking provision. Instead, two on‑site car parking spaces would be allocated to support the veterinary unit’s operation, ensuring ease of access for pet owners.

Supporting Local Pet Owners

If approved, the Portacabin would offer Porthleven residents more convenient access to routine veterinary care, reducing the need to travel for everyday appointments.

The application is now with planning officers for consideration, with The Shipyard potentially set to welcome another small but useful addition to its diverse mix of businesses.
