Road in Redruth closed after sinkhole started to appear

North Street has been cordoned off after police and highways officers attended the scene and closed the affected section of road while investigations are carried out into what lies beneath the surface.

Photos shared on social media show barriers in place and a birds’-eye view of the closure, with the road currently restricted to traffic. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes to prevent delays. 

According to a Facebook update from local business Salt Wind Catering Cornwall, there is speculation locally that the ground collapse could be linked to an old mine shaft, although no official confirmation has been given at this stage. 

The post said authorities were taking no chances while assessments are ongoing, with members of the public advised to keep a safe distance from the cordon as checks continue.

Residents, customers and delivery drivers have been asked to remain cautious while further information is awaited. It is not yet known how long the road will remain closed.
