An upcoming road closure and a series of traffic measures will be in place in Penryn this summer as Wales & West Utilities begins a major gas pipe upgrade.
The works, centred on the Station Road area, are described as vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses — helping to keep people warm for decades to come.
The project will start on May 18 and is expected to run until January 2027.
Wales & West Utilities said the scheme has been planned in conjunction with Cornwall Council, and it has been agreed that traffic management will be required throughout.
This will include give‑and‑take systems where needed, alongside:
- A road closure on Green Lane (July 13–31)
- Rolling two‑way traffic lights on Treliever Road (November 2–December 11)
- Rolling multi‑way traffic lights on Station Road (December 7–January 19, 2027)
The project forms part of the company’s investment of more than £71,000 over the next 12 months to upgrade gas pipes across Penryn. In total, more than 3,600 metres of gas mains will be replaced.
Wales & West Utilities’ Natalie Raphael, who is managing the work, said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe, reliable and there when you need it.
“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
