Cornwall Council is consulting the public on two proposed road changes in Truro, one of which would see the removal of a right-turn lane near a contentious speed camera.
The council is proposing introducing a new puffin pedestrian crossing at the junction of Tregolls Road and Chellew Road, and a similar crossing on Newquay Road.
The local authority is inviting public comments on a proposed new controlled pedestrian crossing facility within the existing signal junction between Tregolls Road, Trevithick Road and Chellew Road/Beachwood Park, by upgrading the existing uncontrolled crossing facility to a controlled crossing arrangement.
“It is therefore proposed to convert the existing uncontrolled crossing on Tregolls Road into a pedestrian crossing, operated via a push-button control, enabling pedestrians to cross the road more safely and conveniently,” states the consultation.

The proposal also includes the removal of the existing right-turn lane to Chellew Road/Beachwood Park, near the contentious 30mph speed camera on Tregolls Road, which has previously been cut down.
The turning lane would be converted to a grass verge, together with the conversion of the existing middle lane into a straight ahead and right-turn lane.
“These changes will enable the existing refuge island to be widened, simplify the current crossing arrangement and improve the overall operation and safety of the junction for all road users,” says the council.
Comments already left on social media about the plan include:
“Have lodged an objection as this will create chaos.”
“Removing the right turn lane on Tregolls Road and making lane 2 a combined straight and right turn lane is going to cause more congestion than there already is in that area.”
“Not against the crossing, it’ll definitely help school children and parents crossing, but not at the expense of a right-hand turn to Beechwood Parc and Tregolls School. Any right-hand turning traffic will just clog up the right-hand lane leaving just one road [lane] up Tregolls, surely?”

The second proposed puffin pedestrian crossing would be within the existing signal junction on the A39 Newquay Road near the entrance to Tregurra park and ride.
This proposal also includes the removal of the existing uncontrolled pedestrian crossing and refuge island to simplify the crossing arrangement and improve overall junction operation and safety.
Referring to both proposals, the consultation adds: “It is considered that the introduction of these measures will increase the safety of pedestrians when crossing the road, where the current arrangement makes safe and convenient crossing difficult, particularly during peak periods.”
