Plans to turn Santander Camborne into banking hub

Cash Access UK Limited has applied to Cornwall Council for permission to convert 6 Trelowarren Street, which has stood vacant since Santander closed its Camborne branch in July last year.

The application, reference PA26/04463, includes the installation of an external cash machine, replacement shopfront glazing, and alterations to improve access at the building.

The existing external ramp would be removed because it does not meet current accessibility standards.

It would be replaced by an internal ramp designed to comply with Part M of the building regulations, with wheelchair access provided throughout the hub.

Proposals also include alterations to the entrance door to accommodate changed floor levels, black-grey treatment to the shopfront frames and door, and a new automatic push-pad door opener for disabled customers.

At the rear of the property, one condenser unit would replace an existing redundant unit, while two roof cowls would be installed for air supply and extraction.

The plans also set out proposed banking hub and post office signs, including an illuminated fascia sign and projecting sign.

Information about available services and participating banks would be displayed inside the shopfront.

The ground-floor unit is in Trelowarren Street within Camborne Conservation Area and the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.

The applicant said the main shopfront would be retained, with changes intended to have a limited impact on the character of the conservation area.

Cash Access UK is a not-for-profit company established by banks and building societies to provide shared banking spaces, access to cash, and basic financial services in communities where facilities are needed.

The applicant said the hub would help safeguard in-person banking support for residents and small businesses following local bank closures.

A decision will be made by Cornwall Council at a later date.
