Budding astronomers from Helston Community College have been given the chance to further their studies overseas, thanks to a £3,400 grant awarded to the college’s science department.

The award from “Our Money Your Dream” – the Youth Opportunity and Youth Capital Fund in Cornwall – is allowing a group of students and staff to visit the Isaac Newton Group at La Palma in the Canary Islands.

The visitors will be meeting the local astronomers and looking at their telescopes, as well as doing observational work that will contribute towards their course work for GCSE astronomy.

The students heading for the stars are Greg Bell, Chris Brookes, Gavan Gardener, Joanne Rolling and Beth Kingston.

They will be accompanied during the visit next March by head of science Roger McMinn, programme leader Darryl Sergison and senior technician and astronomy student Jane Arthur-Eaton.
