PENRYN Athletic recorded their ninth successive win with this close-fought victory at Treyew Road on Good Friday.

This was Athletic’s third win over Truro City Reserves this season despite the fact that the home side were on good form having recorded a notable win over St Austell last time out. Athletic searched for an early breakthrough and were ahead after six minutes. Pete MacLean put a ball down the side of the home box, which Matt McIlory latched onto to power his way past Sam Gerkin. As he reached the byline McIlroy then cut the ball back across the Truro goalmouth for Gregg Hobbs to hit the ball past the stranded Jason Peters from 10 yards out.

Two minutes later Hobbs was in again but hit the foot of Peters’ right hand post.

Then Sean Johnson opened up City with a ball through to McIlroy but he rolled his shot wide.

At the other end Raven did well to beat Jack Greenwood to a one-on-one situation in City’s first real chance of the game.

Athletic then added a second goal on 29 minutes with a brilliantly worked move.

Johnson threw the ball to Pete MacLean who then returned the ball to Johnson, who went on a run before picking out McIlroy with a cross from the byline. The striker then took the ball in his stride and hammered it into the net from ten yards out.

Before the half was up Darren Edwards had a long-range effort tipped over.

However, Athletic knew they would be in for a tough second half and it proved to be the case as a young and mobile City side got their game together.

Both David Blizzard and Hal Davis had to be alert early on to rescue the visitors with goal-line clearances.

Even so Peters was still busy in the home goal making saves from Will Scoley and Davis to keep his side in the match.

Athletic then could have but the game beyond City when Gregg Hobbs played McIlroy in but once again he rolled and excellent chance past the post in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper. Raven then saved well with his feet from Greenwood before City got back into the match through substitute Tom Ball.

He picked up possession and turned Pete Davey, darting towards the byline. Ball then produced an excellent pin-point cross for Josh Sims to head into unguarded net as the back post. Oliver Moody and Chris Davey were then brought on to try and sure things up at the back but the visitors relied on Raven in the remaining few minutes to give them the points. First he produced and excellent save from Terry Rowe pushing his drive out of the top corner and then he gathered a later cross as the visitors held on.
