THE Kernow Youth Leagues kicked-off this weekend in glorious sunshine across the county.

In the mixed under-9s’ seven-a-side league there was a good result for Truro City Devils who top the La Liga division after an 8-1 win over Culdrose Hawks.

Falmouth United Rangers were unfortunate not to be on the winning side in their Premier match. The home side managed to score five goals but still lost to Hayle who netted seven times.

In the mixed under-10s league Culdrose Spitfires started their campaign with a credible 1-1 draw at home to Newquay AFC under-10s.

In the Sieri A division Helston Under 10s just missed out on an opening day victory, going down 2-1 to Alverton Knights.

HELSTON HAWKS 3 CULDROSE 2 In the mixed under-11s La Liga division Helston Hawks welcomed local rivals Culdrose with both managers knowing it was going to be a tough game.

“I was worried when Culdrose Harriers took the lead after five minutes from a great strike from Joshua who left the Helston keeper stranded,” said manager Peter Wake. “The keeper saw it coming but there was nothing he could do about it.”

It was not long after that the quick-passing Culdrose put their forward Joel in space and he smashed another shot into the bottom corner to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Ross Atkinson, in the Helston goal was on top form and it could easily have been 4-0 at half time was it not for his saves.

Helston played a strong defence with James Williams and Dan Turner but we were undone by Culdrose. The midfield of Ben, Zack and Jack worked hard to get the ball forward to George Wake, the lone striker, but each attack was snuffed out by some dogged defending.

At half-time, George Wake came off and Nathan Campbell went on up front and he had an immediate impact. He drove on forward and the Helston players packed the box. In the scramble a Culdrose defender was adjudged to have handled and a penalty was given. Ben Turner stepped up and made it 2-1.

Helston then got on top and James Williams tucked the ball away to make it 2-2. Cambell then got an injury and was replaced by Kyle Woodhouse. Ross Leathley came on in defence and his clever play began to set up the attacks. A ball was then launched out left to Jack Hannaford; who linked up with James and Ben in midfield. They switched play out to the right and found Zack Bramwell. He twisted left and then right, pushed the ball away from the last defender and found a space, took his shot and found the back of the net to win the match.

In the boys under-12 Aliance league Falmouth United Rangers got off to a winning start with victory over Wendron under-12s.

TRURO CITY TIGERS 1 CULDROSE JAGUARS 2 Meanwhile Culdrose Jaguars travelled to face Truro City Tigers under-12s. It was their first taste of 11-a-side football and ended in a 2-1 win.

Playing 4-3-3, Jaguars were indebted to great displays from all the back four as well as stand-in goalkeeper Harry Dark. Luke Tripconey gave the defence a good shield from midfield.

Culdrose got off to a nervy start but could have been in the lead inside the first three minutes when Lewis Parker was through on goal, but he rushed his shot and sent it wide.

Tripconey then picked the ball up in midfield and threaded a beautiful pass through to Hall who struck a great left-foot shot in the bottom corner to put the Jaguars in the lead.

Truro deservedly levelled five minutes later when Bobby Staton took advantage of some sloppy defending to fire his shot into the roof of Dark’s net.

The second half started with both teams cancelling each other out until Todd was bought down in the Truro box and the referee awarded a penalty, which captain Matthew Blee coolly slotted to make the score 2-1 to Culdrose. Culdrose entertain Wendron next Sunday at RNAS Culdrose Sports Ground.

Jaguars: Harry Dark, Charlie Pascoe, Lewis Hemsley, Jack Green, Matthew Blee (c), Phillip Crawley, Jordon Todd, Luke Tripconey, Lewis Parker, Lewis Hall, Fraser Paterson, Callum Archer.

Man of the Match: Phillip Crawley In the boys under-13s Barclay division Culdrose Merlins won 5-0 at Holmans Falcons while Falmouth Town Celts drew 0-0 with Newquay.

HELSTON UNDER-14 3 Falmouth Town Under-14 2 There was excellent weather and a an excellent start to the season for Helston United under 14s when the entertained Falmouth Town’s under-14s side.

In fairness Falmouth will feel hard done to, with the defeat, after dominating the game from the kick-off and forcing a good save from Helston keeper Matt Quick.

A quick break from Helston caught Falmouth on the hop and with some very good link play Helston took the ball to the Falmouth end where Josh Bosustow put the ball into the Falmouth net.

Helston kept up the pressure and a few minutes later forward Ben Coleman scored Helston’s second.

Close to half time a goalmouth scramble saw Falmouth pull one back.

The second half once again saw Falmouth take charge and the Helston defence did well to hold off Falmouth until a save from the Helston keeper rebounded off his glove to the foot of a Falmouth player who put the ball into the Helston net. However, Helston weren’t going to settle for a draw and their third goal came when Ashlee Garner beat the off-side trap with a run and a well taken shot.
