A GOOD all round performance Penryn Athletic’s player-manager Dale Band helped his club into the next round of the Throgmorton Cup as they beat Mousehole at home.

The 32-year-old led by example at Kernick on Saturday as he scored and won a penalty as Penryn saw off a spirited visiting side who twice levelled.

It was Mousehole who started the better as they pressurised a Penryn side low on confidence following their start to the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one campaign.

They forced a number of corners before curling a free kick from just outside the area that Steve Raven did well to tip over the crossbar.

However, Penryn’s only win so far this campaign has come against Mousehole and it wasn’t long before they were troubling their opponents again in and around the box.

New signing Bryn Wheeler thought he had given his side the lead when Pat Shaughnessy clipped a ball for him to head at the back post. Wheeler appealed that the ball had crossed the line before the Mousehole keeper had made an excellent diving save across his goal, but the linesman’s flag stayed down and the score goalless.

That was until the next attack when Shaughnessy’s neat ball inside the full back found Jamie Thirkle on the left side of the penalty box. He cut the ball inside for Band to place a shot past the keeper’s left arm and into the net.

A long ball up field almost produced a second as Shaughnessy won the flick-on and Wheeler placed a shot just wide of the post, under pressure from a covering defender.

A defensive error then cost Penryn as Hal Davis lost possession deep in his own half and Marcus Smith bundled the ball in at the back post.

Frustrated at the lost goal, Penryn’s join-manager Steve Jewell’s patience was tested even further before half time when Shaughnessy received a caution for leaving the field of play without permission, to get treatment on an ankle injury.

And it could have got worse just before half time when Mousehole broke quickly down the right-hand side, only for Tom Patrick to fire his right foot shot over the top.

However keeping it calm must have been the message in the dressing room at half time, as Penryn looked composed on the ball in the opening few minutes of the second half, resulting in a shot from David Blizzard from just outside the area.

Blizzard then helped set up Penryn’s second. The teenager played a one-two with Shaughnessy before racing down the right wing and playing in a low cross which Jamie Thirkle coolly slotted home at the back post.

Wheeler, who worked hard up front chasing down defenders, could have added a second when he leaped to meet a Will Scoley cross, but unfortunately his header was off target.

Penryn then should have made it 3-1 on 68 minutes when Darren Edwards ran forward from his right back position to send a ball across the six yard box. They were three Athletic players there, but none could find the finishing touch and the ball was cleared away.

It proved costly as Mousehole went up the other end and scored - Patrick firing in from the right corner of the penalty box.

Penryn then had to pick themselves up from a second knock-out blow to win the match and it was player-manager Band who inspired his team back onto their feet.

He played a neat one-two in midfield before darting into the box where he was tripped from behind by Mousehole cental defender Jamie Tonkin. Davis, who has a good record from the spot, then fired the ball into the bottom corner to give his side the lead with 15 minutes remaining.

Mousehole then switched to a 4-2-4 formation to chase and equaliser, but it only ended up creating more opportunities for Athletic.

Shaughnessy had three chances to put the game safe, including one which was cleared off the line, before he picked up a throw in from Scoley, deep into stoppage time, and fired a right foot shot into the back of the net from outside the area.
