IT was an end-to-end encounter at Kernick Road on Saturday as Penryn Athletic put in a winning display against Callington Town.

Despite their lowly position in the table the east Cornwall side performed well against Athletic, but were grateful to their keeper Tom Beman for producing a number of top class saves.

Their was action inside the opening minute as Matt McIlroy was put in front of goal only to hit a shot straight at Beman from point-blank range.

Jamie Thirkle then had a great shot tipped onto the bar by Beman before the burly Phil Burgoyne had a shot cleared off the line by Penryn skipper Sean Johnson.

It was to prove crucial save as shortly after Penryn took a 34th minute lead as Hal Davis’ free-kick reached the far post where Dan Jeffreys impeded his own keeper, allowing Hugh Howlett to sneak in and tap the ball home from close range. Thirkle then had the goal at his mercy moments later, but was foiled by Beman who turned his effort from six yards out round the post.

However, Callington’s and Beman’s resistance was broken again just before half time as Dale Band played in Pat Shaughnessy who burst into the box before firing into the roof of the net.

Callington had plenty of possession in the second half, driven on by former Falmouth Town player Lee Beer, but it was Penryn who missed a glut of further opportunities.

Thirkle shot wide and saw another effort tipped over as Beman continued his one-man show.

Last week’s four-goal hero Shaughnessy then looked certain to add his second of the match after latching onto Johnson’s pass, but Beman was equal to his shot as well.

Shaughnessy then crossed to Howlett at the back post and although his header was a good one, Beman pushed it over the top.

The wasteful Shaughnessy then smashed two more efforts over the top before the game entered into the last twenty minutes.

At this stage Callington were still in the match but they elected to shoot from distance too many times and as a result defenders Ben Oliver, Hal Davis and Pete MacLean comfortably saw out the match.

Penryn Reserves 0 Troon 0 (Jolly’s Combination) Pernyn Reserves kept their record as the only unbeaten team in Cornwall Senior Football this season with a credible 0-0 draw away at Troon.

Cody Cooke came close to scoring early on for the home side as he headed over from an Ollie Moody cross.

Stefan Churcher was next to go close as he narrowly missed after latching onto Adam Pyror’s flick-on.

Penryn Athletic thought they had taken the lead early in the second half when Jason Roberts headed in a corner but the effort was ruled out for a push. Troon came more into the game in the second half and also had a goal disallowed, Johnny Jones converting Jamie Miles cross only to be ruled offside.
