Porthleven ended the season on a high note after they beat struggling Foxhole Stars 2-1 at home to finish the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one (west) season in 11th place.

A second half strike from Alan Thomas proved to be the winning goal, but Port were the better side throughout the 90 minutes, with the visitors having goalkeeper Ryan Holland to thank that the margin of defeat wasn’t greater.

Holland’s first save came early on in the match as Dan Stidwell ran down the right before crossing the ball to Matt Fox. His first-time shot looked to be heading in but Holland produced a fine diving save to tip the ball around the post.

Holland then denied Justin Searle later in the half as the midfielder sent in an excellent drive at goal.

However, the deadlock was broken on 28 minutes as Searle played the ball into Thomas who then sqaured a pass to Jamie Thompson in the box and he fired in from 10 yards out.

Foxhole were level though two minutes later as Laim Nicholls broke down the right and passed the ball to Mike Kempthorne, who shot past the advancing Jamie Gray. Porthleven finished the half on top, but went in level after Holland saved efforts from Thompson and Fox.

Port’s winner though came shortly after the break as Thompson played a ball to Thomas, who 30 yards from goal ran into the area before slotting the ball past Holland.

Holland produced another stop from Searle in the remainder of the half, but Port were also grateful to Gray’s excellent save from a Ross Pinhammer drive on 75 minutes as they hung onto all three points.

n There was a minute’s silence held before the match for popular Cornwall FA official Len Lobb, who died on Bank Holiday Monday following illness.
