When members entered Budock Village Hall for their meeting, they were intrigued by what looked like a pile of bed linen near to the president’s table.

Their curiosity was soon satisfied when the speaker, Phyllis Reddock, started her talk. She revealed lots of beautiful hand-made quilts, wall hangings, cushions, etc. She told members that she had been quilting for many years, starting off with embroidery as a child with her mother, but, as she got older quilting became her first love. She took City & Guilds examinations and then went to Manchester University to take a degree in Design and Embroidery. After a 12-month break she started quilting in earnest.

She said that quilting was a very old art, used both by the Chinese and Egyptian dynasties. Quilted jackets were first made in England to go under a suit of armour. All the designs are her own. She then sewed her “piece de resistance”, a beautiful black and gold quilted jacket with bead embroidery. It was very much admired by members. Mrs Reddock has won many awards and prizes for her work. She was thanked by Pat Bennett.

Prior to the speaker, the vice-president, Barbara, opened the meeting by saying how much everyone enjoyed the outing to Marazion. Final arrangements were made for the Strawberry Tea.

Further outings were discussed including visits to the 90th WI Anniversary at Tresillian House, Tavistock Goosey Fair, Boscastle and Yvonne Toms’ “at home”.

Next month’s speaker is Mr Sheriff who is going to talk about the shipwrecks around the Isles of Scilly.

After the usual splendid refreshments the meeting closed at 9.45pm.
