A former Falmouth Grammar School pupil has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Ian Hope, who now lives in St Ives, was given the award for his services to the community in West Cornwall.

The former firefighter has been a magistrate for 25 years and for many years served as chairman of the Cornwall Community Health Council and a Penwith District Councillor.

Mr Hope said: “I feel both proud and very privileged to have received this honour. In my years of public life I have had the good fortune to work with some truly talented and dedicated people, many of whom have been a source of great inspiration.

“I am also grateful to my former employers, Cornwall Fire Brigade , who in my early years of civic and public life, gave me every support and encouragement.”

Mr Hope added that he is now looking forward to the trip to London to receive the award, which he said would be a “marvellous and memorable day” for him and his family.
