WENDRON 182-8 HELSTON 186-3 After last week’s defeat at Mount Ambrose, Helston got back on track on Saturday with a quite remarkable win over neighbours Wendron by seven wickets at Beacon Park.

Remarkable in that victory came in just 21.1 overs despite chasing the sizeable target of 186.

Having conceded the leadership to Penzance seconds last week Helston remain in second spot, but just a point adrift after nine games.

Gulval are also right in contention just a point behind in third spot, with all three teams having won seven games and lost two.

Wendron elected to bat and lost Mark Mitchell for 13 when Tyler Lambert had him caught by Chris Martin. Brett Andrew followed at 52 when Kevin Kelly knocked back his stumps.

Ryan Tresidder, Callum Martin and Jake Pimlott all followed at regular intervals but skipper John Wearne was holding the innings together. He was eventually sixth out at 140 having hit eight fours in his 58 before being caught behind off Lambert.

He put on 45 for the sixth wicket with Sam Care, who was dismissed shortly after for 27. With Ryan Whitbread making 19 not out and William Fairey 15 the visitors had, what appeared, a useful 182 on the board.

Jason Crocker picked up four for 60 at the end of his 12 overs and Lambert got rid of both openers for 46 runs.

In reply Helston lost Josh Ninnis for four before the carnage began. Stuart Pethick and Chris Martin sent the ball to all parts putting on 146 for the second wicket before Martin was caught off Tresidder for 83.

It came off just 53 balls with two sixes and 12 fours. Pethick followed for 86 off 70 balls with 17 boundaries before he was out with the scores level. Tresidder, Whitbread and Craig Burley took a wicket apiece. Helston are at Praze on Saturday, who have slipped to mid table following a good start. Wendron have a tough game with the leaders Penzance seconds at Underlane.

CHACEWATER II 95 HELSTON II 96-7 Helston seconds remain top of division seven with a 42-point cushion over second placed Constantine seconds.

They were made to work for victory at Chacewater however after Andrew Pethick took four for 10 and Chris Aldred three for 13.

Only Ben Thomas (31) and Simon Reed (13) of the home batsmen got into double figures.

Martin Shelley top scored with 16 as Helston were cruising at 48 for one but a clatter of wickets saw a slump to 79 for seven. Peter Morris and David Retallack got them across the line adding 17 unbroken for the eighth wicket. Barripper seconds visit Beacon Park on Saturday.

Chacewater 95 (B Thomas 31; A Pethick 4-10, C Aldred 3-13), Helston 96-7 (M Shelley 16, L Williams 14; T Mullard 3-19, S Poole 2-26). Helston (18 points) beat Chacewater (five) by three wickets.

MT HAWKE & PORTHTOWAN II 173 WENDRON II 78 The division six leaders Mount Hawke and Porthtowan won their seventh game of the season with a 95-run success at Underlane.

Opener Rob Atkinson made 33 before being run out by Wesley Langley. They were 111 for six at one stage but recovered to 173 with some late runs.

Steven Varker took three for 28 from twelve overs with two each for Craig Owens and Langley.

Only opener George Whitbread with 34 and Langley (14) got double figures for Wendron. They were dismissed by Marc Winter and Tony Sullivan in 24 overs, who bowled unchanged.
