Portreath has been named as a “top European emerging hotspot” by a consumer website.

TripAdvisor UK, which gives holidaymakers the chance to review their trip, has placed Portreath second in its list of top ten emerging hotspots.

Over the last 12 months interest in the village on TripAdvisor has increased more than any other European destination apart from Lacock in Wiltshire, which topped the list.

Portreath, which has its past in the mining industry, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

It is a popular surf spot on the north coast and is also home to the Gwel an Mor holiday resort. The park’s general manager Bill Haslam described the village as “one of the undiscovered jewels of Cornwall” and said he was surprised it had taken this long to get noticed.

The top ten emerging hotspots, based on UK site data, are: 1, Lacock, Wiltshire; 2, Portreath, Cornwall; 3, East Kilbride, Scotland; 4, Tarporley, Cheshire; 5, Colchester, Essex; 6, Ripon, North Yorkshire; 7, Lancaster, Lancashire; 8, Limerick, Ireland; 9, Doncaster, South Yorkshire; 10, Dawlish, Devon.
